A day in Markham Ontario
Markham is a busy and vibrant part of the GTA, but it definitely has enough going on to keep you completely occupied and not even realize you’re in a suburb of such a large urban center. Here’s the best way to spend a whole day in Markham, and take in some of the best sites the city has to offer.
Get Something to Eat
There’s almost nothing better than fresh, farmers markets so why not start your day picking your fruits and vegetables? Whittamore’s Farms is over 200 acres of family run farm where, from mid-June until the end of October, you can pick you own produce. Other times during the year they have produce available that was harvested right from their farm. There’s so much more to do here than just pick produce if you get tired of that. There’s a playground for kids to climb on and a few trampolines to jump around on. If you even get tired of that you can explore their very own corn maze or take a ride on a tractor. You can find Whittamore’s at 8100 Steeles Ave in Markham for all the fresh produce your family needs.
Take a Walk
The Markham Museum, located at 9350 Markham Rd, is pretty unique in that it’s an open-air museum, and consists of almost 30 individual buildings. Every building in this museum is historic, so it gives an accurate representation of what life used to be like. As you walk through this museum you will be shown the history and growth of Markham as a city, including artifacts on display from excavations done in Markham between 1968 and 2009. If you have kids, you can even enroll them in one of the day programs offered through the museum. Pack a picnic and bring a good book to enjoy some time in the gardens in front of this historic Markham venue.
Visit a Historic Site
Built in 1871, the Markham GO station is one of the oldest train stations in the city. Another option, just as old, is the Unionville GO station which has actually been converted into a community center. These train stations were built in a classic Canadian railway style, although there have been some renovations to the Unionville location to make it accessible as a community center. You can find the Markham GO station at 214 Main Street North, or the Unionville community center at 7 Station Ln in Markham.
Go to the Fair
This, unfortunately, is a seasonal event but if you’re in Markham around Thanksgiving your time will best be spent visiting the Markham Fair. It is one of the oldest fairs across Canada, and it is the largest community-based volunteer organization in the country. It happens in the week leading up to Thanksgiving weekend and features rides, live bands, shows and tons of games. You can even watch some monster trucks or a demolition derby while you’re there. Watch various demonstrations from gymnastics to sheep sheering, or do some shopping at the many food stalls and vendors at this fair. This exciting family event takes place at 10801 McCowan Rd.
