Festivals in Markham
As a melting pot of various cultures it is no wonder that there’s a number of different festivals and fairs to attend throughout the year. Here’s some festivals to check out in Markham.
Markham Village Music Festival
Usually put on during the month of June, this festival has four stages worth of entertainment, food vendors, Farmer’s Markets and even a kid’s zone. The main focus of this festival is music, so this festival features a line up of amazing artists with music from various genres. In 2018, over 90 musical groups performed during this festival and it’s only expected to grow. This family-centered event takes place on Main Street, Markham North and lasts for an entire weekend. There’s so much for the whole family to do here.
PechaKucha Night
What is this, exactly? Well the word PechaKucha is Japanese for “chit-chat” so during this time members of the community come together to share their ideas via a slideshow presentation: 20 slides, lasting 20 seconds each. These gatherings feature artists, innovators and thinkers not only from Markham but from communities surrounding the city. If you’d like a way to meet the members of your community you don’t normally run into these events are a great way to get out there. You don’t even have to present, you can just sit and listen. These events are based on a pay-what-you-can model, so there isn’t a set price per ticket. They are held at 216 Main Street.
Main Street Markham Farmers’ Market
Is a farmers’ market really a festival? Well, maybe other ones aren’t but this Main Street market has a lot more than just fresh produce. You can definitely shop for produce here – every Saturday morning – but there’s more to enjoy and you could even spend your whole day here. This market features live performances every weekend so while you’re shopping for your produce and baked goods you can listen to local acts perform their songs. What’s better than supporting local farmers and merchants while not listening to that same grocery store playlist over and over? Get outside, enjoy the fresh air and find yourself immersed in the best market listening live music and entertainment. All of this is located at 132 Robinson Street, and is open every Saturday morning from May to October.
Unionville Heritage Day
This day is dedicated to celebrating the heritage of the region. By taking a walking tour, this history will be explained and specific historic sites will be highlighted. There’s also live entertainment on the streets as you walk in the afternoon. Further you can take a horse and carriage ride along the streets during this time if you’d like. This day takes place at the beginning of September, and leaves from Main Street.
Markham has a variety of entertainment, fairs and markets so there’s always going to be something to interest everyone in the family. From farmers’ markets to historic heritage days, Markham is a unique city and offers events and activities year round for its community members to attend.
