No parking and Tow Away Zones in Markham
The City of Markham offers ample parking space for residents, businesses and visiting motorists. Under the By-law Guide for Markham Homeowners, the Parking and Anti-Idling By-laws was created to ensure that our streets are clear and free to accommodate the flow of traffic. Clear streets means that there is always room for emergency vehicles and snowplows in times of necessity. The Anti-idling by-law is also in place to help in the effort to reduce air pollution within the Greater Toronto Area.

Here are some key points to remember:
- Parking is not allowed on City streets from 2:30 AM to 6:00 AM. There are designated areas where you can park to avoid the risk of getting towed.
- You may request for a temporary parking permission if you are having your driveway repairs done. Exemption may also be requested for visitors who need overnight parking.
- All overnight exemption requests must be received before 1:00 AM. Exemptions are not granted between November 1st and March 31st when street parking will interfere with snow removal.
- No one is allowed to park a vehicle on a highway, with the exception of being on the right hand portion of the road. However, this is not applicable to a one-way highway and on its left side.
- You may park your vehicle on the highway provided you park it not over 6 inches from the edge or curb of the highway.
- In the case of angle parking, this is permitted in “Schedule A” sections, where A stands for Angle Parking. There are conditions applicable to this situation such as in the presence of painted lines on the highway for angle parking, or when you park at a 45-degree angle from the curb or the highway’s boundary.
- Parking a vehicle that will create an obstruction to a private roadway is also not permitted. The same goes true when you block a private road.
- Obstructing a section of a crosswalk, sidewalk, and the normal flow of traffic because of a parked vehicle runs you the risk of having a vehicle towed.
- Be sure to avoid public laneways, bridges, and highways within 25 feet of a fire hall’s entrance way. These are no parking zones, and you should never leave your cars in such areas. A Markham tow truck will have to tow your car and there’s a penalty you have to face if you fail to comply with these regulations.
- Use the Pay & Display areas. Parking fees are $1 per hour with a $2 maximum; fines are $20 for an expired meter. Remember to put your Pay & Display tag on your vehicle’s dashboard.
